Matathia Charles
Charles Matathia, our resident writer, describes himself in a lot of ways yet, from peddler of bullshit to bar-room intellectual, none includes ‘writer’. To swing invites to workshops, public readings and all those other spaces where creative types converge to ‘oh and ah…’ at each other’s talent, he proclaims himself to be a social scientist who writes. But if his pseudo-intellectual rants on such topics as Global Capital, Kenya’s Political Economy, Development Industry Fallacies and all that business of Saving Africa, say anything about his strengths as a Social Scientist, then it is no small wonder that his writing still remains, largely, unknown.
So far, his largest contribution to the workshop has been as a drinking partner- at least for those who can stomach both his rants and another beer. For a man who says he grew up with the fear of not knowing where his next beer was coming from, life sure has been treating him kindly, these days.
